MIGRAIN: Narrative

 1. An example of a film or tv show is the Avengers film. This is because the film starts in a world that is sort of balanced but there is a disequilibrium when Loki arrives. Then the avengers fight the Chitahuri and Loki, and ends with the world returning to a balanced state.  2.   Breaking bad opening scene This scene shows the narrative of the story as it establishes the two main characters of the story, Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. The fact that they are in a dessert setting in an rv also shows one of the main locations of the show as this dessert is a repeated location that we see several times. The use of the props of the rv also is a repeated vehicle that we see in the show as it is where the two main characters do there work. The fact that Walter is wearing a gas mask and is driving whilst Jesse is unconscious at the back could symbolise how Walter is the driving force throughout the show and will lead to Jesse to do whatever he wants.  3. Captain Ame...

MIGRAIN: Genre

Task 1: Genre factsheets 1. One example shown of why visual iconography is so important is star trek and star wars Star Trek exists as both film and television texts and so genre  codes and conventions are not limited to one media form.  2. Star trek and star wars also provide importance of narrative in genre as t hey both also share very similar plots but the narratives are very different to keep a clear distinction between the different movies and makes it easier for the audience to recognise that it's two different franchises. 3. According to Bordwell, films can be categorised into period/ country, director/ star, technical process, style, series and audience.  4. Genre is used by audiences through prior knowledge of the genre to recognise whether they may like or dislike a text,  to compare a text to that of the same genre or a different one and in order to prepare us when we begin to start the text as we are already aware of key elements that may be seen based...

MIGRAIN: Structuralism

Part 1: Media Factsheet reading  1. Structuralism is the  theoretical perspective that emphasises the existence of universal structures underlying the surface differences of media texts.  2. Binary oppositions are all societies are made up of the relations such as husband and wife, niece and nephew or brother and sister but are not always evident in the exact same way. They are important because they reflect the underlying structures of society and are essential for culture. 3. genre and auteur link together as they are both examples of structural ways to analyse texts. They both use structuralist approaches to genre and to emphasise patterns.  4. post-structuralism is interested in how ‘external’ structures can affect meaning which is different from structuralism which only focuses on the internal "structures" of texts.   5.  I agree with the idea of post structuralism as movies that have been made 20 or even 10 years ago won't be aware of the society we l...

MIGRAIN: Reception theory

Image
preferred reading - Both RBK and the audience can interpret this as 50 cent using his background to try and promote the product. By talking about how he can't have a plan B he is showing that by perhaps buying these shoes you gain confidence as you'll never need to make a plan B. This shows the audience that buying these shoes is the right decision and everyone should buy them.# negotiated reading-  On one hand, whilst the advert may be trying to use an influence like 50 cent to try to make the advert relatable to everyone, and by saying that "where he is from, there is no plan B", audiences may be encouraged to buy these shoes as by buying them we are making the "right decision", however by using a figure like 50 cent who grew up in a troubling neighbourhood and with the wrong people, some may look at the advert and think that it's only targeted towards specific people. By making the ad focus on 50 cent's past where he grew up in poverty some peopl...
